What Does an HDTV’s Image Processing Chain Look Like?

Philip Cianci at streamingmedia.com has one of the better articles I’ve seen about converting broadcast television signals for suitable display on a PC or progressive panel:

Lost in Translation: Going from TV to PC

These same issues apply to conversion of broadcast signals to ANY progressive, flat-panel display, including HDTVs.  The only thing missing in the article is film mode/cadence detection — but that could generally fall under the notion of interlaced-to-progressive conversion.  The bottom line is that details like color space, gamut, range, aspect ratio, scaling, and scan format all conspire to make this a nontrivial problem.
